Video: Easter Bunny is no help for Teddy in 2012 presidents race warm-up

If Tuesday’s events were any indication of the season to come, then 2012 will be an exciting year at Nationals Park, both on an off the field.

Baseball returned to DC for the summer as the Washington Nationals hosted the Boston Red Sox for a pre-season exhibition game before hitting the road to start the regular season. The Nats and Sox produced plenty of fireworks, including a play at the plate that ended things for the home team in the bottom of the ninth.

Teddy Roosevelt distracted by Juggler during presidents race at Nationals ParkThe Nationals racing presidents got in their final pre-season workout as well, running an exhibition race in the middle of the fourth inning.

Though it didn’t count in the standings, the mascot team pulled no punches, placing a bevy of distractions in the presidents’ way.

As the Rushmores entered the right field corner, a large Easter Bunny was waiting in ambush, managing to place a block on every president except Teddy Roosevelt, who dashed by to take the lead.

But Teddy’s advantage would be short-lived. The Rough Rider has an established weakness for jugglers, and two of them provided all the distraction he needed before he reached the finish line.

Teddy barely noticed as George Washington ran by for the win.

Presidents to race Ringling Bros. clowns Wednesday night

When the Philadelphia Phillies come to Nationals Park, the clowns usually follow, and Wednesday night will be no exception.

The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus hits town this week with a 17-show run beginning Thursday at the Patriot Center. To kick off the festivities, the troupe will be in attendance tomorrow night as the Nationals take on Roy Halladay and the Phillies.

The Ringmaster will sing the national anthem, and Ringling’s famous circus clowns will take on George, Tom, Abe, and Teddy in the 4th-inning presidents race.

Let’s hope Teddy doesn’t find the clowns too distracting.

Teddy distracted by a juggling clown

The crowd at Nationals Park still had something to cheer about during Saturday’s 4th inning presidents race. The Nats had a big lead, and their second consecutive blown save extra innings loss to the Florida Marlins would not unfold for another 2 hours.

For Teddy fans, Saturday’s presidents race was equally frustrating for Teddy Roosevelt’s rooters. After running a tight race the night before, Teddy barely got out of the gate Saturday before being distracted by a clown who appeared along the warning track. As the clown dropped his pants and juggled rings, Teddy pranced and clapped, while Abe paced the field to take the tape.
