After suspending in-stadium races for the entire 2020 season, the 2021 season began with COVID-19 protocols still in place, limited capacity for fans at Nationals Park, and severe restrictions to on-field activity.
Accordingly, the team began the season with the Nationals racing presidents outside the stadium, recording races on video to be played inside the stadium and occasionally shared on social media. Hosted by in-stadium host Mike Ploger, the video races were divided by homestand into “heats,” and no season-long standings to be kept until the presidents returned to live in-stadium racing.
And that they did in June. The presidents returned to live racing on June 11, 2021, with Jefferson taking the first victory in nearly two years. Teddy didn’t win until well after the trade deadline, and his few September victories weren’t enough to catch the others.
Final 2021 Presidents Race Standings
