New food, seven bobbleheads, and the return of fireworks highlight Nationals changes and promotion schedule for 2019

Juan Soto Bobblehead Washington NationalsThe Washington Nationals revealed their 2019 promotion/giveaway schedule today (weeks earlier than usual), featuring a bump in the number of popular bobblehead dolls that so many fans look forward to annually.

After offering only three bobbleheads two years ago, the team has equaled it’s historical high of seven bobblehead giveaways, including first-ever bobbleheads for outfielders Juan Soto (April 12) and Adam Eaton (July 12), and for pitcher Patrick Corbin (August 17).

At a recent “hot stove” event for season plan holders, Nationals Senior VP Mike Shane said that Soto rejected early renderings of his bobblehead because he “wasn’t smiling.” So Soto’s doll, the first of the season, features a grinning #22.

Trea Turner BobbleheadNats bobblehead collectors can look forward to several firsts, including a Trea Turner bobblehead that is the first to feature the Nationals alternate blue “script Nationals” uniform.

On Marvel Super Hero Day May 25, Ryan Zimmerman will be featured on a “Captain Zimmerman” bobblehead that features a Captain America-style Curly W shield, and a Sean Doolittle bobblehead to be given out on Star Wars Day June 15 will feature the All-Star closer dressed as Obi “Sean” Kenobi, complete with Jedi robe and blue light saber.

Max Scherzer will be featured on the other bobblehead on June 21, and a previously-announced bobblehead day of September 13 has been changed to “PenFed Giveaway,” leaving open the possibility of a record eighth bobblehead doll.

Most Nats bobbleheads are produced in quantities of 25,000, but the special edition “Captain Zimmerman”and “Obi-Sean Kenobi” bobbleheads will be limited to the first 10,000 fans, so plan to queue up early.

The schedule features a record number of theme events that require a special event ticket purchase to participate. These include promotions such as Yoga in the Outfield, Ladies Night, Caturday, Pups in the Park, Taste of the World, Stich ‘N Pitch, Margaritaville night, and a new Father’s Day Catch on the Field.

The list also includes dozens of theme nights representing more than half of all home games for groups such as military branches, college alumni, scouts, teachers, youth baseball leagues, and first responders. These also require a special event ticket to sit with the honored group. Such events have been hugely popular in the past and are the focus of a Nationals marketing team looking to bring new audiences to the ball park.

Washington Nationals Radio LanyardAfter opening day features a t-shirt on March 28, expect die-hard fans to scramble for the second game giveaway on Saturday, March 30: a battery-operated radio lanyard that is permanently tuned to 106.7 The Fan and works only inside Nationals Park, with a promise of no delay and “enhanced gameday elements.” The item had been promised last season but delayed because the first batch did not meet the team’s standards.

The team will also give away an expandable beach bag (May 2), a Nationals water bottle (July 23), a racing presidents tote bag (July 27), a Nats camo tank (August 31), a PenFed giveaway TBD (September 13), a Nationals beer stein (September 14), and a Nationals puffy vest (September 29).

Washington Nationals Kids Watch Screech Hooded Towel

Additional giveaways reserved just for kids include a Washington Nationals kids watch on “Kids Opening Day” (April 28), when the team celebrates Screeches birthday and the park is teeming with mascots from other area teams and schools.

Other kids’ giveaways include a Max Scherzer Jersey (May 26), a Screech hooded towel (June 23), a Teddy Roosevelt squeezable toy (August 18), and a lumberjack cap (September 15). All kids’ giveaways are limited to the first 10,000 children age 12 and under.

For the third year, National season plan holders will be given the option of purchasing up to two “Guaranteed Giveaways” coupon books, which reserve one of each giveaway item to be picked up after the promotion date, whether or not you attend that game. In past years, Guaranteed Giveaway books cost $109 each.

Fireworks Fridays throughout the season, which disappeared in recent years, have returned for 2019 and are scheduled for April 26, May 24, June 14, and August 30. There will also be fireworks on Wednesday, July 3.

Washington Nationals Walking Taco - Taco Caminando

The Taco Caminando “Walking Taco”

The team is also introducing three new food concessions for 2019:

A new concept called Taco Caminando will feature the “Walking Taco,” a 16 oz. cup filled with a belly bomb of corn chips, chili, cheese, diced tomatoes and sour cream (in other words, a rebranded Frito pie).

In addition, Maryland-based restaurant La Casita Pupuseria will feature pupusas and other Salvadoran food, and a new concession called Bao Bao will feature steamed Bao — steamed dumplings stuffed with savory fillings.

Giveaways below. Full schedule of special events and ticket offers at Nationals.com.

Nationals 2017 Promotion Schedule: Fewer Bobbleheads, more special events, plus action figures, snow globes and more

nationals-magic-8-ball-promotion

As promised, the Washington Nationals revealed their 2017 promotion/giveaway schedule this morning, and while there are many creative new promotions in store, it was surprisingly bereft of the bobblehead dolls that trea-turner-bobbleheadchewbacca-koozie-washington-nationalswashington-nationals-fedoraso many fans look forward to annually.

Previous years have featured as many as six or seven bobblehead giveaways. In 2017, there will be only three: Daniel Murphy (April 14), Trea Turner (May 12) and pitcher Tanner Roark (June 9).

Starters who’ve never had a bobblehead doll, including Adam Eaton, Joe Ross, and Anthony Rendon, will have to wait for another season.

Bryce Harper, who’s had his share of bobbleheads, will be honored this season with a Starting Lineup Action Figure on August 29.

The schedule features a whopping two dozen promotions that require a special ticket purchase, such as Yoga in the Outfield, college days, Ladies Night, Pups in the Park, and Teacher Appreciation days. Such events have been hugely popular in the past and are clearly the focus of a Nationals marketing team looking to bring new audiences to Nationals Park.

New giveaways of note include the opening day Magic 8 Ball (April 3) and Nationals Fedora (July 26) that had previously been revealed, plus a Max Scherzer snow globe (May 24), a Chewbacca Koozie for Star Wars day (May 27), a Flag Day patriotic tank top (June 14),  a kids’ coloring book (July 30), and a beer stein for Oktoberfest (September 29).

It is expected that Signature Sundays and Kids Run the Bases will return on Sundays, though the Nationals did not announce those dates yet as part of the official calendar.

Likewise, no Nats Postgame Live concerts have been announced.

Known dates are below. Items noted with an * require a special ticket, even if you are a season plan holder. Any additional promotions will be updated here as they are announced:

Magic 8 Balls, spiked water, tater tots and more: Nationals reveal select bobbleheads, promotions, and new concessions for 2017

nationals-hot-stove-camillo-rizzo-fpThe Washington Nationals held its annual “hot stove” gathering for full season plan holders at Nationals Park on Wednesday evening, featuring the team’s Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer Valerie Camillo, General Manager and President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo, and broadcaster FP Santangelo.
As expected, Rizzo received questions about the team’s depth and bullpen, with no season-planholder-gift-2017great surprises revealed; but in keeping with tradition, Camillo had a few announcements related to the fan experience in 2017, including the annual season planholder gift, an “alternative leather” box.

The full promotional calendar will be announced February 16, but Camillo teased the crowd with a few previews, including an opening day giveaway of a Nationals Magic 8 Ball, a sliding Trea Turner bobblehead on May 12, and a Nationals Fedora on July 26.

Camillo also revealed a number of theme days for 2017, including Star Wars Day (May 27), 90s Night (August 11), and Oktoberfest (September 29). Special ticket events will include the return of College Days, Taste of the World (July 8), Ladies Night (July 29), and a new Easter Egg Hunt (April 16) and Mothers Day Brunch (May 14).

new-nationals-retail-clothingCamillo also revealed some new items for sale at the team stores, and some new items at select concession stands, including spiked water, a mojito cart, a tater tot stand, and three new food items: an italian sausage burger (sections 110, 141, and 310), a chicken fried steak sandwich (at Virginia Country Kitchen), and marinated chicken skewers (at Change Up Chicken in sections 110 and 129).

For what it’s worth, besides Turner, the Nats’ front line players yet to be featured on a bobblehead doll are Daniel Murphy, Tanner Roark, Adam Eaton, Joe Ross and Anthony Rendon (Rendon has been featured on a garden gnome). If the Nationals issue six bobbleheads as they have in recent years, this could be your list. Stay tuned for the rest of the promotional schedule in February.

Thanks to Luis Albisu for the photos and reports from the event.

Video: Gnomes attack Nationals racing presidents

Garden Gnomes Nationals Park - Anthony RendonNationals Anthony Rendon Garden Gnome presidents raceNationals Anthony Rendon Garden Gnome presidents raceNationals GIF Anthony Rendon Garden Gnome presidents raceThe gnomes are back, and shield your eyes, because it’s not pretty.

It was one year ago this month that the Nationals started a fan frenzy by introducing the Jayson Werth Garden Gnome. That night, the a life-size gnome clobbered the racing presidents with a single swing.

On Tuesday, gnome fever returned to Nationals Park with Anthony Rendon Garden Gnome night; and sure enough, when it came time for the fourth inning presidents race, a life-size Rendon gnome was waiting in the wings, giant bat in hand.

But the gnome was not alone. As the race began, the original life-size Jayson Werth gnome took a position along the first base line, and a new life-size Rendon gnome positioned himself just downfield.

As the presidents entered the home stretch, they cautiously approached the bruising tandem, not wanting to repeat last year’s debacle; but as Abe Lincoln tiptoed around the Werth gnome, the Rendon gnome sprang to life and clobbered the Great Emancipator.

Teddy Roosevelt was next. The Werth gnome sprang to life, swinging at Teddy, knocking the Bull Moose to the ground.

George Washington followed, and the Werth gnome knocked him out with a second swing that caused a chain reaction presidential pile up.

That left William Howard Taft as the only president on his feet, but the Rendon gnome clotheslined the Chief Justice to knock out the last of the competitors.

Washington recovered to his feet and ran wide to take the win.

Taft tweeted this brief clip. Full finish line video below.

Calvin Coolidge Bobblehead added to Washington Nationals promotion schedule

The Washington Nationals will give away Calvin Coolidge bobbleheads to the first 25,000 fans in attendance at the September 21 game vs. the Baltimore Orioles.

Calvin Coolidge Bobblehead Washington NationalsThe giveaway was revealed as part of the Nationals’ ongoing partnership with the White House Historical Association, which includes signage on the Nationals Park left-field garage honoring a Coolidge first pitch, in-game White House history quizzes, and promotion of the annual Official White House Christmas ornament (which this year honors the 30th president).

The team announced the addition of Coolidge as the sixth of the racing presidents on Wednesday.

When the Orioles visit Nationals Park, tickets are often at a premium, and the addition of the team’s first Coolidge bobblehead makes it a hotter ticket still. On StubHub, ticket prices have already risen for the Monday night game.

Our promotion/giveaway schedule has been updated accordingly.

Nationals “Ten Years Of…” campaign kicks off with new team ads, more giveaways, and a custom brew, plus changes at Nationals Park

The Washington Nationals revealed more details of their planned year-long tenth anniversary celebration Tuesday at Nationals Park, including new giveaway items, concessions, and an anniversary ad campaign, plus some features being added to the ballpark itself.

Valerie Camillo at Nationals ParkWashington Nationals Ads Ten years of Washington Nationals Ads Ten years of Washington Nationals Ads Ten years of Washington Nationals Ads Ten years of Washington Nationals Ads Ten years of Nationals Bobbleheads and giveawaysChief Marketing and Revenue Officer Valerie Camillo has embraced the team’s fans on social media, and upped the ante Tuesday by hosting a small group of active fans at the ball park, announcing the new programs, and asking them to share the news via social media.

Among the many pillars of the year-long campaign is be an effort to thank the DC community for supporting the Nationals. The thank-you effort will include unexpected acts of thanks, kicking off on Wednesday as team representatives will show up at a Maryland McDonald’s location and pay for lunch for all patrons who show up during that hour.

Elements of the team’s new ad campaign were also revealed. The “Ten Years Of…” theme will focus on ten years of memorable game moments, but also embrace other aspects of the fan experience, including the development of a young fan base in the DC community.

The previously-announced promotion/giveaway schedule was enhanced with details about several new giveaway items tied to fan-inspired “theme nights.” For 80s night, fans will receive a Nationals-themed rubiks cube. For Star Wars day, fans will receive a Nats-themed R2D2 beverage coozie. For college night, fans will receive fairly large and substantial-looking tailgate chairs in UVA colors. Quantities have yet to be announced.

Images of the first three “10 Year” commemorative bobblehead dolls show Livan Hernandez throwing the first pitch in Nationals history in his road uniform, Ryan Zimmerman pumping his fist after walking off the first game in Nationals Park history, and Stephen Strasburg tipping his cap after his major league debut.

Finally, the 10th anniversary nesting doll was revealed to including dolls of Max Scherzer, Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, Chad Cordero, and Frank Robinson. All changes have been updated here

Nationals Park itself gets two significant updates for 2015. The locations of notable home runs in Nationals history will receive permanent recognition in the form of red painted seats. The initial “inductees,” chosen based on distance and historical significance, include Ryan Zimmerman’s home run from the stadium’s first game in 2008, Adam LaRoche and Bryce Harper’s two third level home runs from April, 2014, Jayson Werth’s 2012 NLDS Game 4 walk-off home run, Michael Morse’s Red Porch dinger from July, 2012, and Bryce Harper’s third level shot during the 2014 playoffs.

In the Club Level, or more accurately, The Norfolk Southern Clubhouse level, a first-of-its-kind mechanical scoreboard wall has been installed to provide game updates for those taking advantage of the club’s indoor amenities during the game.

The wall-sized scoreboard features model trains that move along tracks to indicate balls, strikes, and outs, and pop out of bases to indicate baserunners. Above the club level, a model train will now run nonstop during and after the games.

New food options were not discussed, however Camillo shared that a beer cart will be featuring a custom brew made specifically for the Nationals’ tenth anniversary season. Its name: Sam Adams Nats Anniversary IPA.
