For 2017, the Nationals presidents rates returned to its controversial roots by reviving a much-maligned tradition: keeping Theodore Roosevelt out of the win column (Teddy went 0-for-84), and by restoring the presidents race to the original “Rushmore Four” — George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Teddy.
Meanwhile, newer presidents Taft, Coolidge, and Hoover (who’d been added between 2013 and 2016) were “retired” to the team’s new spring training home in West Palm Beach, Florida, where they began their own new tradition, the 3-man spring training presidents race. Thomas Jefferson won his share of races, taking his first presidents race title since 2006, but George Washington got his revenge, winning the race during all three of the team’s playoff games.
