For the first time ever, the Nationals racing presidents donned varied uniforms for the fourth inning presidents race, in preparation for Sunday night’s USA vs. Portugal World Cup match.
Instead of wearing their usual Sunday best, George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt wore their patriotic uniforms to represent Team USA. Thomas Jefferson wore his red home jersey to represent Portugal, and William Howard Taft dressed in black to represent the Portuguese goalie.
Team USA entered the field with Lincoln kicking a soccer ball along the warning track. Jefferson entered from the bullpen, immediately faked a pulled hamstring, and was given a red card for flopping by a referee.
Taft waited by the finish line for the oncoming team, but Abe faked to his right, Bill dove to his left, and Lincoln kicked the ball across the finish line, leading fans along the first base line chanting “USA! USA!”
