Wednesday was Army Night at Nationals Park, and during the fourth inning presidents race, the racing presidents stopped in the outfield to hold an impromptu tug-of-war competition.
With Thomas Jefferson and Abe Lincoln anchored on one side by the portly William Howard Taft, it appeared that George Washington and Teddy Roosevelt didn’t stand a chance on the other side.
But the two former Army leaders let go of the rope, and as their competitors tumbled to the warning track, Teddy took off for the finish line.
The victory was the second straight for Teddy, who vaulted into unprecedented territory this late in the season: sole possession of first place in the standings.
On Tuesday night, Teddy had won after being the only racing president to survive the onslaught of a man in an ice cream cone who hunted down and tackled all of Teddy’s competitors.
The costumed character, dubbed “Nice Cream Cone,” was celebrating Tuesday’s $1 dollar ice cream night at Nationals Park.
