The Washington Nationals donned their new patriotic uniforms for the first time Monday night in honor of Military Appreciation Day at Nationals Park, and the racing presidents joined the festivities with new matching uniforms of their own.
With Nationals starter Tom Gorzelanny and San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner locked in an intense, fast-paced pitchers duel, Monday’s race came less than an hour after first pitch.
The presidents raced single file wire to wire in the order of their presidencies, with George Washington leading the pack carrying an American flag. After the race, they tossed t-shirts into the crowd.
The new uniforms, which feature a stars and stripes Curly “W,” will be worn for the new “Patriotic Series” announced by the team for 2011.
In addition to Monday’s game, the series will include Memorial Day (May 30 against the Philadelphia Phillies), Independence Day (July 4 vs. the Chicago Cubs), Labor Day (Sept. 5 vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers), and Heroes Day (Sept. 11 vs. the Houston Astros).
UPDATE: I’ve added this close-up of the new uniform in response to some of the comments complaining that you couldn’t see the new uniforms.
With the team now on the road, the presidents races will return with the homestand beginning May 13.

As anticipated, the Washington Nationals revealed their new uniforms Wednesday night at a Nationals Park fashion show featuring members of the team.
The new Nationals Uniforms offered few surprises, with a new emphasis on the Curly W logo, and many other small changes including the elimination of the gold trim around the lettering and numbers.
Focus on the Curly W as the major identity of the team is a good move, but lost in most of the coverage is the elimination of the block “Nationals” that has adorned the team’s jersey’s since its inaugural season.
I’m going to miss it, but it’s a good PR move, in that it should help the team finally put the 2009 “Natinals” misspelling incident behind them forever.
Great comprehensive coverage of the event over at Nats News Network.

New Washington Nationals uniforms for the 2011 season are set to be unveiled at a Nationals Park fashion show next month.
Have we seen the last of Teddy Roosevelt's home racing whites?
Invitations were sent out this week by the Washington Nationals for the VIP event, which will be held at the ball park on the evening of November 10.
Nationals players Tyler Clippard, Ian Desmond, Ivan Rodriguez, Drew Storen, Ryan Zimmerman and Jordan Zimmermann will show off the new uniforms as part of a fashion show for invited guests.
The new jerseys will be available for purchase beginning Thursday, November 11 exclusively at the Nationals Park Team Store, with players on hand to sign autographs beginning at 11:30am.
It’s been two years since the team last announced new Nationals uniforms. At that time, blue alternate jerseys were introduced for the launch of the new ball park, and a script “Washington” replaced the block lettering on the team’s road uniforms.
It’s been speculated that a similar change is in line for the home uniforms, with the block “Nationals” lettering disappearing in favor of script. Personally, I hope it’s not true, having been a fan of the block lettering since it was first introduced as part of the Nationals logo in November of 2004.
The new threads will make a nice birthday present for racing president Teddy Roosevelt, who is set to celebrate his 152nd birthday tomorrow.
New shoes didn’t help Teddy win in 2010. Perhaps another uniform change will…

The Nationals toyed with the forces of mojo Thursday night at Nationals Park, trotting out their rarely-used red, white, and blue alternate jerseys for the players, and letting the racing presidents don their traditional period uniforms for the first time this season.
It didn’t work.
The Nats’ normally solid defense fell apart early, committing 3 errors, and Teddy Roosevelt delivered one of his weakest races of the season. Even after cheating and cutting the outfield corner, the original Rough Rider never challenged front-runner Thomas Jefferson.
The Battle of the Beltways starts Friday. Look for the Orioles to bring their creatively-named mascot The Bird to Nationals Park for a third year of presidents race-related hijinks.

Washington Nationals fans who are getting used to expecting victory found more than their fair share of frustrations from the squandered scoring opportunities in Saturday’s game vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers. If there was a silver lining, it was only for devotees of the Nationals’ presidents race.
The Nats’ reached the 13th inning of a home game for the first time since the 2008 season, and as is their custom, the racing presidents returned to the field in the middle of the 13th for a second presidents race of the day.
The extra innings gave the fans double the opportunity to check out George, Tom, Abe, and Teddy’s sparkling new red uniforms with the Curly W in front. The uniforms have been featured this season on the HD scoreboard introduction, but before today had yet to make an appearance on the field.
If the trend of the last few days is any indication, Sunday’s game should polish off this homestand on an entertaining — and winning — note. To follow Wednesday’s Let Teddy Win celebration, Teddy chose Thursday to plant a tree in foul territory instead of racing on Earth Day. On Friday, he jumped back into the competition by racing on a Segway (Abe won anyway), and today they raced twice in their new red uniforms before doing the bunny hop as they left the field. There’s no telling what the presidents have in store for Sunday’s finale, but if the Nats’ unusual 8-day streak of winning every other day continues, there should be celebrating on South Capitol Street.

A day after picking closer Drew Storen in the first round of the draft, the Washington Nationals signed the #10 overall pick to his first contract and introduced him to the fans at Nationals Park.
In a young season that has already had more than its fair share of screw-ups, the quick signing and introduction was meant to show Nats fans that Nationals management can get things right.
So what the heck were they thinking when they put their new pitcher in uniform #26?
#26 is, of course, Teddy Roosevelt’s number…
a number which the Nationals avoided issuing
to any player this season… a number which, frankly, should be retired until Teddy Roosevelt breaks the curse and wins the presidents race.
Hasn’t this organization had enough bad luck? Wearing #26, Teddy has easily been the most snakebitten National of all.
Lest you think the number has nothing to do with it, remember that the last Nationals player to don #26 gave Teddy a run for his money. It was outfielder Wily Mo Peña, the slugger with the .205 batting average who hit a whopping two home runs for the Nationals last season before being chased out of town.
Why curse the new kid?
Last night, Storen got a first-hand introduction to Teddy’s travails as the newest National was on hand to throw out the first pitch. In the 4th inning, the crowd went wild as Teddy broke out to a huge and seemingly insurmountable lead, but Teddy stopped just short of the finish line to pull out a sign for the cameras welcoming the new #26 to Nationals Park.

When the Nationals issued misspelled uniforms (spelled “Natinals” instead of Nationals) to two players on April 17, the blogs jumped on it, but I don’t think any of us thought the story would still be making news two weeks later.
In fact, with the team getting off to such a rough start, the Washington Nationals’ uniform mistake has gotten more national coverage than the team itself. National sports news, numerous talk shows, and even the Today Show siezed on the misspelled uniform as symbol of the team’s early ineptitude.
The day Tony Kornheiser called for somebody to be fired, Majestic Athletic, which provides the team’s uniforms, was forced to issue a public apology for the mishap.
To their credit, the Nationals have not hidden from the gaff, and used the opportunity to offer up the now-famous mistakes at Saturday night’s annual Washington Nationals Dream Foundation gala. The misspelled jersey worn by Adam Dunn fetched $8,000 — the highest price of the night.
But was the whole “misspelled” uniform a mistake? Not according to CafePress, which now has on display “Natinals” jerseys and shirts with the caption “No ‘O’ In Here,” a great reminder that at least we’re not the Orioles.
