If you haven’t been following the Washington Nationals racing presidents on social media, this week wouldn’t be a bad time to start. Teddy Roosevelt and his big-headed compatriots are making daily appearances around the DC area as part of a countdown to opening day campaign, and giving prizes to folks who show up and share on social media. More importantly, following their “workouts” has been pretty entertaining (in between they’ve even been sharing some classic GIFs from this website).
The presidents have conducted workouts at the Lincoln Memorial, National Harbor, and Farragut Square, and made appearances at a DC United match, a Navy baseball game (where Abe picked up an endorsement from NJ governor Chris Christie), the White House Easter Egg Roll, and the Maryland Police Academy. On Thursday, they’ll be at TC Williams High School, and Sunday at a University of Maryland baseball game. In between, they’ll be holding exhibition races at Nationals Park on Friday and Saturday.

Like several members of the Nationals, racing president Teddy Roosevelt had a game plan for Saturday, but tripped up on the execution.
It was a beautiful day for baseball, with both the players and the racing presidents decked out in their patriotic jerseys for Memorial weekend at Nationals Park.
But the sun did not shine on either for long. The Nats’ pitching and defense was unraveling in the middle of the fourth inning just as the presidents race began.
Teddy Roosevelt ran a clean race and held the lead in the home stretch, but decided to turn and execute a diving head butt into his rival William Howard Taft.
Teddy missed badly, and Taft soared past to take over first place in the presidents race standings.

Friday night marked the anniversary of “Nellie” Taft’s death in 1943, and to memorialize the occasion with dignity, the 27th first lady popped out from a jack-in-the-box to spook the Nationals’ racing presidents and spur her husband William Howard Taft to victory.
Perhaps the late Helen Louise Herron Taft was making her first appearance at Nationals Park to check out the Cherry Blossoms. After all, it was Mrs. Taft who arranged for the planting of the 3,020 Japanese cherry trees that grace the Washington, DC Tidal Basin.
The victory by husband Bill moved the Chief Justice into a first place tie with Abe Lincoln in the season standings.

The pattern was hauntingly familiar during the fourth inning Saturday at Nationals Park.
The mid-inning presidents race started with the season’s only winless president tripping all the others out of the gate, then running unopposed toward the finish line. Just as P.A. Announcer Jerome Hruska proclaimed “Nothing’s going to stop him now!,” a costumed cow going by the moniker Beef Nachos Libre leaped from the stands to tackle the leader just short of the finish line. To add insult to injury, longtime nemesis Abe Lincoln was trailing close enough behind to scavenge the win and extend his lead in the season standings.
It’s a pattern that repeated itself seemingly hundreds of times between 2006 and 2012, as Teddy Roosevelt racked up 525 consecutive losses, one near miss at a time. When Teddy notched his first win on the final day of the 2012 regular season, it seemed the era of presidents race conspiracies was over.
Now, sixteen races into the 2015 home season, it was Thomas Jefferson who found himself winless, tried to take things into his own hands, and ended up running into the surprise buzz saw of the day.
Here’s hoping the Nationals haven’t decided to revisit their troubled presidents race pass by fixing every race for Thomas Jefferson to lose. If they thought Teddy had a strong movement behind him, wait till they mess with the Sage of Monticello.

With a sellout crowd on hand for Jayson Werth Garden Gnome night Tuesday at Nationals Park, Teddy Roosevelt enlisted the mischievous magical gnome himself to help take his fourth consecutive presidents race.
Wearing a pointed hat and holding a bat and ball, Jayson Werth’s doppleganger stood still as a statue as Teddy took photos of him on the first base line, but when Roosevelt’s rival presidents approached, the gnome abruptly swung his bat, knocking out all four competitors before returning to his statuesque pose.
As Teddy crossed the finish line, members of the secret service carried the frozen “gnome” off the field.
Full and slo-mo GIFs below in what may be the best video of the year. The whole finish line video, which is also below, is really worth watching.

Wearing a protective mitt apparently borrowed from Bryce Harper, Teddy Roosevelt ambushed his fellow racing presidents at the finish line of Sunday’s presidents race at Nationals Park.
After using the mitt to defeat Sharknado Abe the night before, Teddy tweeted a message of thanks to Bryce Harper. Harper and Ryan Zimmerman have been wearing the mitts when running the bases as they recover from hand injuries.
Here’s the highlight GIF, with slo-mo enhancements. Full sound video below.

For the second straight night, Sharknado returned to Nationals Park, and this time attacked the racing presidents from both directions.
Sharknado 1 met the presidents on the warning track, knocking Teddy back into the pack. Only Abe Lincoln remained on his feet, but then Sharknado 2 arrived from the rear and leveled the Great Emancipator.
Jefferson recovered to his feet and was unchallenged for the win.
