Video: Chaos reigns as visiting mascots assault racing presidents, Easter Bunny tackles Teddy Roosevelt, and Screech takes the tape

Each had a history of interfering with the fourth inning presidents race, but never on the same day. What followed wasn’t pretty.

When the race began, visiting mascots YouDee (University of Delaware), Slapshot (Capitals), Pinch (Maryland Blue Crabs), Bill the Goat (Navy), Talon (DC United), Testudo (University of Maryland), and The Colonial (George Washington University) all gathered along the first base line to greet the racing presidents.

George, Tom, Abe, and Teddy emerged from the centerfield gate wearing bunny ears, and Jefferson pulled ahead early, holding onto his lead until the presidents found themselves facing a sea of mascots in the home stretch.

That’s when Slapshot took a running leap over the back of fellow eagle Talon to nail the sage of Monticello with a head-butt.

Delaware’s YouDee then rammed in George Washington, smashing the father of our country’s face.

Finally Maryland’s Testudo stiff-armed Abe Lincoln, knocking off his ears and sending him to the ground.

The mascots then let Teddy Roosevelt run past, seemingly to secure his first victory of the season.

But alas, that’s when the Easter Bunny appeared from nowhere — or more accurately from the new Dugout Club section — and took down the Bull Moose with a vicious diving tackle.

Screech, repeating a scene from last season, waltzed across the finish line to steal the win.

Teddy, however, remains winless as the Nationals begin their road trip to Atlanta.

Sadly, Scherzer’s masterful outing was wasted, as defensive miscues made some in attendance wonder whether things really would be different this time.

The 4th inning presidents race brought a similar feeling of deja vu for longtime Nationals fans. In a relay race that featured only the original Rushmore Four, Teddy Roosevelt bolted ahead of the pack when The Easter Bunny jumped out from the stands to tackle George Washington.

But Teddy stopped short of the finish line to celebrate, and William Howard Taft appeared to summon the Bunny from the outfield.

The Bunny lept over a table to take out The Rough Rider, handing Taft the opening day victory.

Above is a slo-mo GIF of the takedown. Below are videos of the race…

Video: Easter Bunny Takes Out 4 Racing Presidents

Easter Bunny Attacks Nationals Racing PresidentsOn Easter Sunday at Nationals Park, the racing presidents wore their Sunday finest and ran a tight, clean fourth inning race with Teddy in the lead down the home stretch.

But the Easter Bunny was waiting in foul territory and took a leap towards Roosevelt, taking out the Rushmore Four in one fell swoop.

With George, Tom, Abe, and Teddy on the ground, the plodding William Howard Taft was able to race by for his second win of the season.

It was the first regular season appearance for the Easter Bunny, who last appeared in an exhibition game in 2012.

If Tuesday’s events were any indication of the season to come, then 2012 will be an exciting year at Nationals Park, both on an off the field.

Baseball returned to DC for the summer as the Washington Nationals hosted the Boston Red Sox for a pre-season exhibition game before hitting the road to start the regular season. The Nats and Sox produced plenty of fireworks, including a play at the plate that ended things for the home team in the bottom of the ninth.

Teddy Roosevelt distracted by Juggler during presidents race at Nationals ParkThe Nationals racing presidents got in their final pre-season workout as well, running an exhibition race in the middle of the fourth inning.

Though it didn’t count in the standings, the mascot team pulled no punches, placing a bevy of distractions in the presidents’ way.

As the Rushmores entered the right field corner, a large Easter Bunny was waiting in ambush, managing to place a block on every president except Teddy Roosevelt, who dashed by to take the lead.

But Teddy’s advantage would be short-lived. The Rough Rider has an established weakness for jugglers, and two of them provided all the distraction he needed before he reached the finish line.

Teddy barely noticed as George Washington ran by for the win.
