The home team had not beaten the visiting St. Louis Cardinals since the 2012 playoffs, and so, coming off an inauspicious series opener Thursday, the Nats needed to exorcise some demons.
In the fourth inning Friday, Teddy Roosevelt and the racing presidents did their part, reversing the direction of the nightly presidents race and heading towards a new finish line along the third base side.
Perennial loser Roosevelt came on strong from behind and pulled away for an easy victory, perhaps inspiring the Nats toward victory and enabling the hero of San Juan Hill to take regain sole possession of first place in the standings.
