The Nationals presidents race season is turning into an unlikely battle between perennial contender Abraham Lincoln and longtime loser Teddy Roosevelt.
During the current homestand, Abe had extended his lead over the hero of San Juan Hill to four games, but when “Honest” Abe got too cocky Monday night at Nationals Park, the Bull Moose exacted his revenge.
Lincoln began the race by chasing down William Howard Taft on the warning track. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson then attempted to clothesline the Great Emancipator, but Abe forced his way through and it was the founding fathers who ended up on the ground.
Lincoln took off for the finish line but stopped to showboat for the crowd along the foul line. That’s when Teddy leaped from the stands and planted Lincoln face down in the grass.
Teddy’s victory was his second of the series.
On Friday night, Teddy celebrated the night’s big movie opening by racing with a stuffed baby Godzilla. Roosevelt tossed the lizard at his competitors as they approached the finish line, and as they all hit the dirt, Teddy turned to claim the win.
