The biggest crowd of the season took in a rare old fashioned double header under sunny skies Saturday at Nationals Park, and Abe Lincoln emerged as the unlikely hero, delivering two victories to George Washington in a presidents race twin bill.
In the afternoon opener, the presidents and Pittsburgh’s visiting racing pierogies paired off in a relay race. Teddy and Tom teamed against George and Abe, with Teddy and Abe running anchor.
Pierogies Jalapeño Hannah and Oliver Onion were leading the anchor leg when Abe Lincoln took over, shooting past them to claim victory in race #1 for himself and George.
In race #2, the pierogies were all ahead of the presidents, but Abe shot out once again and passed the field. Just as PA announcer Jerome Hruska began to declare him the victor, Abe turned around, ran back at the field, and toppled three oncoming pierogies with a single body blow.
As Jalapeño Hannah beat Abe with her purse, George ran for the finish line, claiming victory #2 for the day.
