The first presidents race of 2009 took place today in the most unlikely of places — New York’s Nassau Coliseum. Billed as “Kids Day” by the host New York Islanders of the National Hockey League, the Coliseum was host to mascots from around the country for today’s game vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins.
It being Presidents Day, our own Nationals racing presidents made the trek up north to pose with fans for pre-game photos and autographs. The “main attraction” for Kids Day was saved for the second intermission, when George, Tom, Abe, and Teddy took to the ice for their first-ever presidents race on skates.
NHL.com has the full play-by-play of the race, plus a terrific photo gallery of all the day’s festivities. Of course, with hockey sticks in hand, it should surprise no one that Abe and Teddy scuffled, with Teddy getting knocked to the ice. Ouch.
