Video: Shark Week Teddy runs away from Sharky

The Nats Shark Week homestand continued Saturday night with the racing presidents trotting out another shark-themed twist for the fourth inning race.

Teddy Roosevelt held a big lead until Presidents Race newcomer “Sharky” showed up, startling the Rough Rider and causing him to reverse direction and flee in retreat.

Abe Lincoln took the win to maintain a narrow lead over Thomas Jefferson in the season standings.

Abe Lincoln dons Batman costume to take down the Sharknado

The Shark Week absurdities reached new heights Friday night at Nationals Park, as the Sharknado returned to wreak its own brand of havoc on the Washington Nationals presidents race.

Racing presidents batman vs SharknadoSharknado popped out of the home bullpen and took out front-running William Howard Taft, then spun its way along the warning track toward the rest of the oncoming presidents.

But Abe Lincoln raced from behind dressed in a Batman costume, and the Caped Emancipator collided with Sharknado, clearing the way for Thomas Jefferson to take the victory.

Shark Week at Nationals Park SharkyShark Week continued Tuesday night at Nationals Park as George Washington stole another presidents race victory, appearing from the bullpen with a short “shark,” who proceeded to take out all of Washington’s competition.

“He’s given up his hunting hound for his pet shark, Sharky,” intoned Nationals Park P.A. announcer Jerome Hruska. As his pet mowed down the competition, George turned and crossed the finish line unopposed.

Slo-mo Video: Teddy nearly pulls off a win in presidents race #499

It was oh so close.

Teddy came within a hair of winning presidents race #499 Friday night as the Washington Nationals racing presidents kicked off their latest homestand with a tribute to the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week.

Teddy Roosevelt entered the arena for the 4th inning race sporting shark teeth and a makeshift dorsal fin. He trailed the pack from the start, but got assistance from the same shark who had attacked him during the
presidents race 400 meter individual medley two weeks ago.

Shark Week Teddy RooseveltThe accomplice shark raced ahead, and with Teddy trailing behind him, took down Abe Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, leaving Teddy in the lead in the home stretch. Victory was Teddy’s for the taking, but a pause to glance over his shoulder proved to be his undoing and the window a resurgent Lincoln needed to come from behind and steal the race at the wire (slo-mo video below).

Friday’s loss sets up a historic 500th presidents race Saturday night at Nationals Park. Presidential speechwriter Paul Orzulak recently called for a Teddy victory in the 500th race in The Washington Post. Paul will be in attendance Saturday night. Here’s hoping Teddy Roosevelt gives us our money’s worth.
