Racing presidents take on Olympic sailing via Segways fitted with sails

Nationals Racing Presidents Olympic Sailing SegwaysThe Nationals racing presidents once again stretched beyond the boundaries of track & field as their week of Olympic tributes continued at Nationals Park.

After taking on swimming on Friday, the mascot team stayed in the virtual water Saturday with their own unique take on an Olympic sailing regatta.

George, Tom, Abe and Teddy entered the field aboard Segway personal transporters, each of which was fitted with a sail.

Alas, the wind was no help to Teddy Roosevelt, who brought up the rear for loss #497.

Video: Abe beats Teddy again, this time both on bikes

Abe Lincoln Cheats presidents race Nationals ParkJust one day after Abe Lincoln blatantly stole a race while riding a tricycle, the Great Emancipator was at it again.

On Wednesday night at Nationals Park, the presidents ran a 2-wheel relay, with George Washington and Thomas Jefferson running the first leg aboard Segway personal transporters, and Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt running the anchor leg aboard Capital Bikeshare bikes.

“Honest” Abe was teamed with Washington, but Lincoln decided he wasn’t waiting for the tag. Abe jumped head of Teddy on the anchor leg and never looked back, to win steal his second race in a row, this time a shared victory with George.

As promised, the Nationals moved the presidents race back to the first base line for Friday’s outing, but despite getting a rare second chance, the result was the same for poor Teddy Roosevelt.

Fans in attendance got a rare treat when the game stretched into the 13th inning: a second official presidents race. It was the ninth such opportunity in Nationals history — an opportunity that was wasted on Lincoln, who chose to hide in the bullpen instead of participate, then jump out mid-race to ambush Teddy Roosevelt.

With Teddy on the ground, Jefferson and Washington burst by and made it a two-man race, with Tom edging George at the wire to take an unprecedented 3-0 lead in the standings after just two home games.

Racing presidents chase White Sox Southpaw on Segways

The Washington Nationals returned to town Friday night for a short homestand of interleague play against the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals, sandwiched at either end with starts by rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg.

Chicago White Sox Mascot Southpaw at Nationals ParkPresident Barack Obama joined the sellout crowd on Friday to see his beloved White Sox take on the Nationals new main attraction, and unlike his previous visit to Nationals Park, he stayed until the 9th inning, and got to witness his first Nationals presidents race.

Washington Nationals racing president Teddy Roosevelt rides a Segway during the presidents raceChicago White Sox mascot Southpaw has joined the team in DC for the weekend series, and surprised the crowd by emerging alone out of the gate for the beginning of the 4th-inning presidents race.

Just as the crowd was wondering where the presidents were, they emerged in centerfield aboard Segway personal transporters, with Thomas Jefferson at the front of the pack, and
Teddy sadly lagging far behind.

As they passed Southpaw and approached the finish line, Jefferson appeared to lose control, and Abe Lincoln passed him to claim the victory. As he broke the tape, Illinois’ favorite son pointed up to Obama’s box along the third base line.

The racing presidents were sporting brand new red running shoes to kick off the homestand, but as it turned out, they had no need for them at all.

Racing presidents run relay on segways & bicycle taxis

Washington Nationals racing presidents Teddy Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson ride the anchor leg of a presidents race relay at Nationals ParkThe racing presidents pulled out all the stops for the standing room only crowd of 41,985 tonight at Nationals Park, completing the homestand against the Boston Red Sox with a multi-vehicle presidents race relay.

Abe Lincoln and George Washington competed in the first leg, riding Segway personal transporters along the left field warning track toward a finish line that had been moved to center field from its usual location in foul territory.

With Abe on a Segway and unable to put on his usual burst of speed, George was able to hand a huge lead to Thomas Jefferson, who took on Teddy Roosevelt in the second leg riding pedicab bicycle taxis.

Tom jumped into one of the taxis as the driver started peddling him to the finish line, but then Teddy Roosevelt took the reigns and started peddling his own cab. The Rough Rider ignited the crowd when he briefly overtook Tom, but the peddling wore him out. Teddy faded at the finish and failed to deliver for the 201st time.

Teddy races on a Segway, but starts late

Perhaps Teddy Roosevelt has a short memory, having been disqualified in the past for attempting to motor his way to victory. Perhaps he thought his antics would go unchallenged by the light crowd on hand for Saturday’s rain delay make-up game vs. the Phillies.

Either way, by the time Teddy entered Nationals Park on a Segway to take on the other racing presidents, the point was moot. His entrance through the centerfield gate came too late for him to catch up to George, who captured his fourth win of the season.

Presidents Race Video: Presidents race on Segways

From YouTube member jjqb08 comes this video of Sunday’s presidents race in which fans were treated to the site of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt running the race aboard Segway personal transporters.

As the video makes perfectly clear, the stunt was made possible courtesy of City Segway Tours. It was a lot of fun and a great promotional idea worthy of a permanent spot on our presidents race videos page.

Looking forward to 2009, one can imagine lots of other possibilities for our racing presidents. What local companies would you like to see adding their own flair to a special race next year?
