Video: Presidents pummel Milwaukee sausages

Nationals fans who braved the cold at Nationals Park Friday night were rewarded with a walk-off victory as the team kicked off a series vs. the Milwaukee Brewers with a dramatic 10-inning affair.

The Brewers, who are known for both their frugality and their famous sausage race, once again refused to bring their racing mascots to town; and so, for the third consecutive year, the Nationals made do with their own substitutes.

In the fourth-inning presidents race, the “un-racing sausages” made their now annual appearance by blocking the finish line. The Nats racing presidents busted through their cardboard blockade, and Jefferson pulled ahead for the win.

Expect to see more antics from the makeshift sausages as the series continues this weekend.

That Cat, grounds crew create presidents race chaos

How do you follow up on what was arguably the most electric night in team history?

The day after a sellout crowd was mesmerized by Stephen Strasburg’s debut, and Teddy barely missed making a little history of his own, the Nationals racing presidents answered that question by throwing out everything but the proverbial kitchen sink.

Wednesday’s 4th-inning presidents race looked at first like a repeat of the night before.  The “un-racing sausages” joined Pittsburgh’s racing pierogies in a crowded field, and held a lead over the presidents into the final turn.

On this night, however, the critter waiting in ambush was none other than long-time presidential nemesis “That Cat,” who had recruited the Nationals Park grounds crew to the cause.  They stormed onto the field, taking down all of the visiting mascots, and leaving Thomas Jefferson with a clear path to victory.

Teddy ambushes sausages, fork & knife in hand

The Nationals’ racing presidents called on Teddy Roosevelt to complete their 3-game mockery of Milwaukee’s racing sausages on Sunday at Nationals Park.

When the 4th-inning presidents race began, the “Un-Racing Sausages” were once again on the field with the presidents, and were spotted a big lead over George, Tom, and Abe; but as they rounded the right field corner, they saw Teddy Roosevelt waiting in ambush, wearing a bib, knife and fork in hand.

The Rough Rider knocked down each of the sausages in succession, finally taking “Choriz-No” to the ground with a full body slam.

As is so often the case, Abe was right behind to steal the glory, and his 3rd victory of the young season.

“Un-Racing Sausages” Return to Nationals Park

The Un-Racing Sausages are back.

Un-racing sausages mock the Milwaukee Brewers at Nationals ParkThe Nats kicked off a long homestand Friday with a the first of a 3-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers, and once again, the team long-known for its famous sausage race refused to bring its racing mascots to town to accept a challenge from our own racing presidents.

So, as they did last August, the Nationals shined a spotlight on Milwaukee’s negative response by bringing out the “un-racing sausages” — fake mascots with names like “Un-talian sausage,” “No-Lish Sausage,” “Not-Dog,” “Not-Wurst,” and “Choriz-No.”

The presidents race was competitive to the finish, when Abe Lincoln pulled away then used his body as a bowling ball to knock down the sausages, who were waiting behind the finish line.

Presidents Race wins “Best on Field Promotion” of 2009

For the second time in their three full seasons, the Washington Nationals racing presidents have been awarded the “Golden Steagle” award for Best Contest or On Field Promotion of the year.

The award is bestowed annually by Gameops.com, a web site which connects sports teams and event producers with ideas and tools for on-field promotions. Our own racing presidents won the award in 2007 and were nominated again last year.

The 2009 award was granted jointly this year to both the Nationals presidents and Milwaukee’s racing sausages, also previous winners in 2003, and widely recognized as baseball’s original racing mascots. Gameops editor John Cudo called this year’s tie “a case of split between two great classic promotions….and an on-going battle which ends in a tie on this day.”

The Nationals mascot team mocked the racing sausages earlier this year when the Milwaukee mascots refused to race against the presidents during a Nationals homestand vs. the Brewers.

Cudo, who works for the Cleveland Cavaliers and spent 7 years as the mascot for the Minnesota Timberwolves, has written numerous times about the presidents race and claims a “mild addiction” to the Let Teddy Win blog, calling it “a season long tutorial on how to keep a promotion you do every night interesting.”

According to Cudo, the annual Best Of awards are among the most popular features of their site. Nominations come from readers and are judged by a panel of industry leaders and insiders.

Presidents Mock Milwaukee with “Un-Racing Sausages “

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery, but perhaps the Milwaukee Brewers didn’t get the memo.

In the narrow world of racing baseball mascots, it’s widely acknowledged that the Milwaukee Brewers’ famous racing sausages are the one-and-only originals. But in recent seasons, it has been equally recognized that the Washington Nationals racing presidents have raised the art to a whole new level. Recognized, that is, everywhere except Milwaukee, where apparently they don’t like being one-upped.

While other teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles have joined in the fun and popularity by bringing their mascots to race with the presidents, the Milwaukee Brewers have simply not returned the Nationals’ phone calls.

Milwaukee Brewers racing sausages have substitutes at Nationals ParkSo when the Brewers visited Nationals Park for a recently completed homestand, the Nationals mascot team chose to mock Milwaukee’s mascots by trotting out their “un-racing Sausages.” Made of cardboard, the fake mascots included “Un-talian sausage,” “No-lish Sausage,” “Not-Dog,” “Not-Wurst,” and “Choriz-No.”

With all five on the field for the series finale, the racing presidents spotted them a big lead before tackling them all to the ground near the finish line. Afterwards, the presidents used signs to issue a challenge: “Racing Sausages We Are Waiting.”

Teddy Roosevelt Says “Bring On the Sausages!”

Given Teddy Roosevelt’s pitiful record
in the Washington Nationals’ presidents race, he can hardly afford
to be thinking ahead to the next series, but that’s what he did on Wednesday night at Nationals Park.

At the start of our favorite 4th-inning ritual, a self-assured Abraham Lincoln once again spotted the other presidents a big lead, giving Teddy a chance at victory, but as the racing presidents came down the first base line, Teddy stopped and posed for Dave the videographer with a sign reading “Bring On the Sausages!”, and Thomas Jefferson raced on to beat Abe to the finish line.

In addition to disappointing his rooters in the stands, Teddy’s move also confused those in right field who couldn’t see the sign, including youtube user tsbicca:

The reference on the sign is, of course, to the Memorial weekend series which begins Friday night at Nationals Park against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers’ Miller Park is home to the famous Sausage Race, which deserves credit for starting this whole racing mascot thing back in 1995 (it started at the old Milwaukee County Stadium as a promotion for Milwaukee’s Klement’s Sausage Company).

Earlier this month, when the Pittsburgh Pirates came to town, they brought the Racing Pierogies to Nationals Park. Could it be that we’ll see the original racing sausages in town this weekend?
