Video: Teddy hurdles over tables to take out his fellow presidents

Teddy Roosevelt hurdles jumps over tables wins presidents raceThe pouring rain wasn’t the only hurdle facing the racing presidents during the fourth inning Friday night at Nationals Park.

As the race began, the team’s “Secret Service” had set up hurdles in the form of folding tables in foul territory along the first base line.

The race was tight approaching the tables, but as his fellow presidents tumbled into the obstacle, the Rough Rider took a beautiful leap over the tables and stuck a clean landing that carried him to victory.

After rain delay, Teddy races with an umbrella

After a 1/2-dozen roster moves, the signing of third baseman Ryan Zimmerman to a long-term contract, and the calling up of rookie Jordan Zimmermann for his first major league start, there was an unusual mood of cautious optimism in the air tonight at Nationals Park. With the sound of thunder booming in the distance, it seemed the perfect night for Teddy to take his first presidents race victory.

It was wishful thinking. More than 3 hours after the scheduled start time for tonights game between the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves, the racing presidents finally took to the soggy outfield. After taking an early lead, Teddy seemed more concerned with staying dry, struggling as he ran with a comically undersized umbrella, while Abe passed him by to take the tape.

Abe now has sole posession of first place in the presidents race standings. Let’s hope this isn’t a repeat of last year.

Reminder: Two days left for Half price tickets for Teddy fans.

Only rain prevents Abe from winning his 50th presidents race of the year (and Teddy his first)

It was in some ways a fitting end to a home season filled with one disappointment after another.

The Washington Nationals were to play their last home game of the season last night, and as part of “Fan Appreciation Night” had planned a non-stop onslaught of giveaways every inning, but with the Florida Marlins facing elimination from wild card contention, no make-up game will be scheduled.

The question on the minds of presidents race fans had been whether Abraham Lincoln would win a record 50th presidents race of the season, or Teddy Roosevelt would win his first, but neither will get his chance. Final standing here.
