Video: Pups in the Park proves distracting for animal lover Teddy Roosevelt

Pups in the Park at Nationals ParkHundreds of dogs and their owners got to witness another walk-off win for the Nationals Saturday as the team’s annual Pups in the Park promotion returned to Nationals Park.

Barkley, the canine mascot of the Washington Humane Society, was on hand to assist with the day’s festivities, but proved to be a distraction for fellow mascot and noted animal lover Teddy Roosevelt. B

Barkley and Teddy were busy playing in the outfield as the fourth-inning presidents race got underway. Roosevelt failed to compete as George Washington took the tape.

The sellout event, in which tickets and accommodations are provided for dogs and their owners, has been expanded to four dates this season. Dog tickets are still available for June 2 against the Atlanta Braves, July 7 against the Colorado Rockies and Sept. 22 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Full Nationals Promotion/Giveaway Schedule for 2012

Here it is — the full Washington Nationals promotion/giveaway schedule for the 2012 season at Nationals Park.

There are a several additions to the preliminary schedule we previously shared. Notably, the very popular Pups in the Park promotion, in which a section is reserved for canine guests, returns to Nationals Park for four dates in April, June, July, and September. Only the previously announced luggage tag giveaway has disappeared.

The 2012 promotion schedule includes three Saturday post-game concerts (bands all to be announced), and bobblehead nights for Michael Morse, Stephen Strasburg, and Ryan Zimmerman. Fan Appreciation Day has been redubbed “Fantastic FANale.” The only announced Fireworks for the season are on Tuesday, July 3rd.

The Nationals clearly don’t anticipate the need to promote their three series vs. the Phillies, or their interleague series vs. the Yankees and Rays. Those fifteen games are notable for their absence of giveaways.

Suddenly it’s Dog Days at Nationals Park

Teddy in the lead on Pups in the Park DayOver five hundred canines were among the nearly 30,000 in attendance Saturday night at Nationals Park, as the Nationals hosted their second “Pups in the Park” day for 2011.

Sadly, the game was a dog as well — a third consecutive one-run loss filled with missed opportunities for the Nationals.

Lacking a real dog to accompany him, Teddy Roosevelt made up his own for the 4th-inning presidents race. Teddy competed while carrying a balloon-animal dog, which appeared to weigh him down in the home stretch as Thomas Jefferson took the win.

The popular Pups in the Park promotion allows a limited number of fans to buy $5 tickets for their canine pets, and sets aside a special section with relief areas and other dog-specific amenities.

To meet the demand, the Nationals added a third Pups in the Park day on Saturday, September 24. Tickets are available at

Nationals Promotion/Giveaway Schedule for 2011

Washington Nationals 2011 individual game tickets go on sale to the public next Thursday, March 3, and while the Nationals game day promotion/giveaway schedule is not final, many of the details are now available on

Highlights this season include bobblehead nights for Jayson Werth, Ian Desmond, and a 3rd “fan choice” which will be determined by an online and in-the-park poll. The team has also expanded the highly popular “Pups in the Park” promotion. The perennial sellout event, in which dog owners can buy tickets to bring their pets to the game, has been scheduled for three games during the 2011 season.

In addition to the known dates and giveaways listed below, Friday Night Fireworks, Signature Sundays, and Sunday Kids Run the Bases programs will return on Fridays and Sundays. Notably absent from the schedule are the team’s free T-Shirt Tuesdays — a mainstay of the previous three seasons.

Nats add more tickets for Pups in the Park August 29

We previously reported that the Washington Nationals Pups in the Park dates were sold out; but the Nats have responded by adding another seating section for this popular event. Five dollar dog tickets are available once again for the Sunday, August 29 game vs. the St. Louis Cardinals.

Pups in the Park can’t stop Abe Lincoln

Washington Nationals Pups in the ParkIt was a beautiful dog day afternoon at Nationals Park as four-legged Nationals fans filled the Left Field Mezzanine seats for Saturday’s sold-out Pups in the Park promotion.

Dogs were everywhere — streaming through the centerfield gates, running around the field before the first inning, and featured during all of the Nationals’ usual between-inning entertainment segments from the Dance Cam to the
Fan of the Game.

So it was no surprise when Teddy Roosevelt entered the field for the 4th-inning presidents race with a dog on a leash.

But this was no ordinary dog. It was a giant Brian Griffin, the dog from The Family Guy. Brian ran along with Teddy to an early lead, but as they ran across the outfield warning track, Teddy let go
of the leash, and unleashed Brian on the other racing presidents.

As Teddy sprinted for the finish line, Brian ambushed George Washington, then pushed Thomas Jefferson to the ground; but Abe Lincoln managed to sidestep the big dog, and took off after Roosevelt, passing poor Teddy just before hitting the finish line.

Tom shoves Teddy to the ground as George takes over 1st

With first place in the standings up for grabs, George Washington left no opportunity for monkey business, breaking away from the pack early and leading wire to wire, but that didn’t prevent Thomas Jefferson from shoving Teddy Roosevelt to the turf as they approached the outfield corner. What Tom has against Teddy, we don’t know.

It was hard to see Tom’s transgression from the first base stands, but the second video courtesy of Nats Fan and YouTube member shmaggie23 reveals all!

Unlike George, the Nats couldn’t hold their lead, as a late rally by the Florida Marlins ruined a quality outing by Craig Stammen. The homestand ends this weekend with two matinees: Pups in the Park day on Saturday, followed by Mothers Day Sunday.
