Presidents Race Video: Extra Innings Yawner

From YouTube member Swirlywand comes this video of Friday night’s extra-innings presidents race in which the few fans who were still at Nationals Park at midnight watched Abe, Tom, and Teddy give up and turn around before the race was half-way through.

The Season Begins with a Bang at Nationals Park

Nationals Park Grand OpeningI will post more later today, but suffice to say the grand opening of our new Nationals Park was nothing short of a smashing success for every Washington Nationals fan in attendence.

Every Washington Nationals fan, that is, except Teddy.

Though Ryan Zimmerman’s walk-off home run thrilled and delighted the crowd, our great and much misunderstood 26th president disappointed his loyal fans once again. Whether he was trying to cheat or was just confused about the rules is uncertain; but while George, Abe, and Tom began their sprint along the warning track, Teddy simply shot across center field.

Had he not stopped to chat with a couple of members of the Atlanta Braves outfield, Teddy might have beaten George across the finish line, though whether he would have been disqualified remains an open question.

George’s achievement as the first racing president to win the presidents race at Nationals Park has been reflected in the newest section of letteddywin.com — the Presidents Race Standings page, which will continue to be updated throughout the season.

Presidents Race Auditions Video

Yesterday’s presidents race auditions brought 55 finalists to the Washington Nationals former home, RFK stadium, to see if they had what it takes to don a giant president head and race from the outfield to home plate.

Ian Koski at Nationals Pride put together a terrific little video highlighting the presidents race audition experience, and featuring Steve Roche, Nationals Mascot Coordinator:

Teddy Roosevelt was noticeably absent. Could it be that the privilege of donning the esteemed Teddy costume is being reserved for the 20 winners? Not so, says Washington Nationals spokesman Tom Davis. “He needs to rest up,” Davis told WTOP News. “He’s had a rough couple of years. He’s looking to get back in shape.”

Congratulations to the new squad. See you at Nationals Park next month!

Presidents Race Videos

Presidents Race VideosAnnouncing the Presidents Race Videos page.

Nats fans know that the presidents race is superior to all those other racing characters from around Major League Baseball. The theme is uniquely DC, the costumes are outrageous, and I doubt any sausage could ever captivate a city the way loveable Teddy has captured the hearts of Washington Nationals Fans.

Still, it’s hard to appreciate the presidents race if you haven’t seen it.

That’s why I am happy to announce a new section of the site for Presidents Race Videos. Lots of you have taken great videos of the presidents race since it started in 2006. Now I have compiled some of the best of those videos in a new section that has a permanent tab at the top of blog.letteddywin.com.

Today, the presidents race video page features vintage races from the team’s first season, and great moments from last year like Teddy’s zip line entrance on opening day, his various attempts to cheat, and his botched coronation on Teddy Roosevelt bobblehead night.

It’s a living video history of the presidents race. The 2008 section is ready and waiting. If you have any great videos you’d like to add, let me know at teddyroosevelt@letteddywin.com.
