Washington Nationals Presidents Race World Cup USA Red CardWashington Nationals Presidents Race World Cup USAWashington Nationals Presidents Race World Cup USA 2For the first time ever, the Nationals racing presidents donned varied uniforms for the fourth inning presidents race, in preparation for Sunday night’s USA vs. Portugal World Cup match.

Instead of wearing their usual Sunday best, George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt wore their patriotic uniforms to represent Team USA. Thomas Jefferson wore his red home jersey to represent Portugal, and William Howard Taft dressed in black to represent the Portuguese goalie.

Team USA entered the field with Lincoln kicking a soccer ball along the warning track. Jefferson entered from the bullpen, immediately faked a pulled hamstring, and was given a red card for flopping by a referee.

Taft waited by the finish line for the oncoming team, but Abe faked to his right, Bill dove to his left, and Lincoln kicked the ball across the finish line, leading fans along the first base line chanting “USA! USA!”

Here’s the finish line video, followed by the full call as heard in the stadium by Nationals PA announcer Jerome Hruska:

George and the racing presidents commemorate 9/11

The Washington Nationals on 9/11 Remembrance DayThe Washington Nationals observed 9/11 Remembrance Day Sunday throughout the team’s 8-2 win over the Houston Astros. Many of the usual between-inning routines at Nationals Park were replaced by commemorative honors, videos, and tributes. Even the racing presidents showed solidarity, running their 4th-inning course wearing their new patriotic uniforms in single file behind our first president George Washington, who carried an American Flag from wire to wire.

Video: Teddy taunts the other presidents a little too early

Teddy Roosevelt in the lead, Washington Nationals Presidents RaceTeddy Roosevelt taunts Abe and Tom at Nationals ParkAfter yesterday’s embarrassing taunting by Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt was motivated to exact a little revenge on Labor Day at Nationals Park.

Unfortunately for Teddy, he was a little too aggressive.

With the racing presidents decked out in their holiday patriotic uniforms, Teddy jumped out to a quick start, and in an unusually fast-paced race, actually extended his lead as the presidents raced along the warning track.

But with the race barely more than halfway over, the Rough Rider decided to start rubbing it in.

With Teddy’s back turned toward the other presidents, his lead evaporated quickly, and the Rough Rider soon
found himself spun around and huffing
to catch up to the pack.

Presidents debut new uniforms for Military Appreciation Day

New Nationals UniformsWashington Nationals Military Appreciation DayNationals Military Appreciation DayNew Washington Nationals Patriotic UniformsThe Washington Nationals donned their new patriotic uniforms for the first time Monday night in honor of Military Appreciation Day at Nationals Park, and the racing presidents joined the festivities with new matching uniforms of their own.

With Nationals starter Tom Gorzelanny and San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner locked in an intense, fast-paced pitchers duel, Monday’s race came less than an hour after first pitch.

The presidents raced single file wire to wire in the order of their presidencies, with George Washington leading the pack carrying an American flag. After the race, they tossed t-shirts into the crowd.

The new uniforms, which feature a stars and stripes Curly “W,” will be worn for the new “Patriotic Series” announced by the team for 2011.

In addition to Monday’s game, the series will include Memorial Day (May 30 against the Philadelphia Phillies), Independence Day (July 4 vs. the Chicago Cubs), Labor Day (Sept. 5 vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers), and Heroes Day (Sept. 11 vs. the Houston Astros).

UPDATE: I’ve added this close-up of the new uniform in response to some of the comments complaining that you couldn’t see the new uniforms.

With the team now on the road, the presidents races will return with the homestand beginning May 13.
