GIF: Teddy Roosevelt scares MLB with astronaut costume

Racing president Teddy Roosevelt celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing Sunday at Nationals Park by donning a makeshift astronaut helmet fashioned from tinfoil.

The tactic helped propel Teddy to his 16th victory and an unprecedented July lead in the presidents race standings, but it apparently scared the folks at Major League Baseball, who tweeted this GIF:

For the record, it was the fourth time Roosevelt has attempted the astronaut helmet, but the first time he’s won while wearing it.

It was not Teddy’s finest hour.

In the first presidents race after the All Star break, Teddy Roosevelt came out swinging Friday night at Nationals Park, turning on his fellow presidents before they even finished coming out of the centerfield gate.

The Rough Rider shoved George Washington to the ground, but failed to down his other competitors, backpedaling as Thomas Jefferson slipped by him on the warning track.

Teddy chased Jefferson for the length of the race, and cut the outfield corner to try to catch up, but Washington, who had recovered early, caught up to the Bull Moose and exacted his revenge.

It should be a fun second half of the season.

Video: Bear cub attacks Teddy Roosevelt in the outfield

Chicago Cub tackles Teddy RooseveltThe beating that Gio Gonzalez and the Washington Nationals put on the Chicago Cubs Saturday afternoon was nothing compared to the grizzly scene that played out in the fourth inning presidents race at Nationals Park.

With Teddy Roosevelt in the early lead, an orange, oversized bear cub came running from the home bullpen and shoved the Rough Rider to the ground, but the other presidents exacted revenge on Teddy’s behalf, as George Washington finished the job with a body slam.

Video: George Washington leads a July 4th Parade at Nationals Park

George Washington 4th of July Nationals ParkWhen baseball returned to Washington DC, Major League Baseball established an annual tradition of playing a morning baseball game on Independence Day in the nation’s capital.

For the first several years of the Nationals’ presidents race, it was also an annual tradition for the writer of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, to lead the other presidents while carrying an American flag.

But last year, the team handed the honor to George Washington, and once again in 2014, it was George who led the parade.

Video: Abe shows no sense of humor on International Joke Day

Abe Lincoln cheats presidents race Nationals ParkOn Tuesday night at Nationals Park, Teddy Roosevelt stopped his fellow racing presidents on the warning track to read them the “Joke of the Day” in celebration of International Joke Day.

George, Tom, and Bill started laughing, but Abe Lincoln grabbed the joke from Teddy’s hands, tore it up, and raced for the finish line.

We knew Abe cheated. Apparently he’s also got no sense of humor.

Videos: Nats Park crowd chants “USA” as racing presidents act out USA vs. Belgium

And this time, the crowd really got into it.

George Washington and Abe Lincoln represented Team USA on Monday, wearing their home white uniforms. They got off to a rough start, as “Honest” Abe had trouble handling the ball and tripped on the outfield warning track.

But Belgian defenders Thomas Jefferson and William Howard Taft (wearing red uniforms) weren’t able to capitalize. George held them up then broke away as Lincoln recovered and pushed the ball past them.

Washington took Abe’s pass and advanced the ball towards goalie Teddy Roosevelt (who was wearing his Hawaiian shirt). The Rough Rider managed to stuff Washington’s shot, but the Founding Father recovered the ball, put a fake on Teddy, and sent the goalie flying to his left as he passed to the charging Lincoln.

The Great Emancipator finished the job, then joined Washington in leading the Nationals Park crowd in a rawcous chant of “USA! USA!”

Here’s the finish line video:

And here’s the official full call of the race by P.A. announcer Jerome Hruska:

Video: Meet the man who dressed as Teddy Roosevelt at the World Cup

When the USA scored for the second time during Sunday’s World Cup match vs. Portugal, international broadcasts caught a glimpse of a fan dressed as Teddy Roosevelt celebrating the go-ahead goal.

The image of the Rough Rider cheering in the stands was instantly shared on Twitter and Vine, but credit Yahoo! Sports
for tracking the man down.

His name is Mike D’Amico, and he told Yahoo! he was “super stoked” to find out he had he had become a Twitter sensation.

“I’ll take your word for it until I get some WiFi,” he said. “We’re out in the Amazon. I don’t have a whole lot of Internet here.”

D’Amico explained that he wears the costume because “…it gets people excited. It gets people involved. When I’m trying to start a song in the stands, it’s easier to listen to Teddy Roosevelt than some other guy in another shirt.”

Bully!
