Video: Taft & Lincoln stop presidents race to commemorate dedication of Lincoln Memorial

You have to hand it to the Nationals mascot team. They really do their homework.

Taft commemorates dedication of Lincoln MemorialFriday marked the 92nd anniversary of the dedication of D.C.’s Lincoln Memorial — a ceremony presided over by the 27th U.S. president, William Howard Taft.

So on Friday night at Nationals Park, racing presidents Taft and Abe Lincoln stopped mid-race to reenact the ceremony.

Lincoln grabbed a chair and struck his famous pose, while Taft grabbed an oversized camera to preserve the moment.

Meanwhile, George Washington and Teddy Roosevelt raced by, with Teddy edging the Founding Father by a nose.

On the MASN TV broadcast, Bob Carpenter and F.P. Santangelo were just confused:

After Memorial Day loss, fans plan chicken sacrifice Tuesday at Nationals Park

Led by self-styled “Rubber Chicken Man” Hugh Kaufman, Nationals fans will sacrifice a rubber chicken at noon Tuesday outside the Nationals Park centerfield gate.

Nationals rubber chicken man sacrifice breaks bad luckNationals Racing Presidents photo finish - George Washington edges Teddy RooseveltDespite outscoring opponents over the last eight games, the Nationals have won only two of those contests, and find themselves with a losing record after Monday’s 3-2 loss to the Miami Marlins.

As we’ve reported previously, Kaufman has performed the ritual “dozens of times” in the team’s ten year history. The act, which is designed to “remove bad juju” from the ball park, has become less frequent as the team has done well in recent years, but pitcher Gio Gonzalez has adopted the cause, having participated in the most recent sacrifice himself last August. Some fans have begun sporting Chicken Mode t-shirts when Gonzalez pitches.

“Our injury plagued squad has fallen below .500,” said Kaufman. “They need the extra Chicken Mode juju to help heal them, and energize our sedated bats.”

In unrelated news, George Washington edged Teddy Roosevelt wearing military fatigues for the Memorial Day presidents race win.

Kaufman encourages fans to attend on Tuesday. “Although it’s a work day,” he said, “I hope all Nats fans who can make it to this short ritual at lunch time, will come to help add good juju to our team.”

ESPN Video: Teddy Roosevelt undone at PNC Park by selfie with racing pierogie Potato Pete

Teddy Roosevelt Potato Pete Racing Pierogies selfieTeddy Roosevelt Potato Pete Racing Pierogies selfieConfrontations between the Nats’ racing presidents and the Pittsburgh Pirates’ racing pierogies tend to attract national media attention, and Friday night was no exception.

At PNC Park, fan favorite Pierogie Potato Pete came out of retirement once again to play a trick on the visiting Teddy Roosevelt.

For a moment, Potato Pete’s surprise appearance looked like it would be a repeat of the famous body slam on Teddy Roosevelt that ESPN Sportscenter anchor Scott Van Pelt called “the greatest highlight I’ve ever seen” in 2009.

But Pete stopped short, pulled out a giant cell phone, and got Teddy to pose for a selfie as Jalapeño Hannah raced by for the win.

The highlight was featured on ESPN’s Sportscenter:

Video: Human head pops out of Abe Lincoln’s chest during Nationals presidents race

On Monday night’s broadcast of the Nationals’ 14-inning game vs. the Cincinnati Reds, MASN replays of the first presidents race picked up an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction.

Human head pops out of Abe Lincoln's chest during Washington Nationals presidents race - racing presidents

As founding father’s George Washington and Thomas Jefferson clotheslined Abe Lincoln, a human head briefly pops out of the Great Emancipator’s chest as horrified bullpen pitchers look on.

It was not a great night for Abe, who moments later was clobbered by Teddy Roosevelt. and was blocked again in the 13th inning race.

Thanks to @FederalBaseball for the video, and to the intrepid DC Sports Bog for never missing a thing.

Teddy Roosevelt wins extra innings Nationals presidents race 13thFor the first time since August, 2012, the Washington Nationals took a home game to the 13th inning Monday night, triggering a rare treat for presidents race fans: a bonus presidents race.

Earlier in the evening, Teddy Roosevelt had clobbered Abe Lincoln to gain a spot in the season standings.
In race #2, Teddy’s compatriots conspired once again to slow Lincoln down, as George, Tom, and Bill formed a roadblock in the outfield but let Teddy get by to take his historic second victory of the night.

The extra-innings affair moved Roosevelt within two games of Lincoln in the standings. It was the 12th double-header in presidents race history.

The Nationals presidents race season is turning into an unlikely battle between perennial contender Abraham Lincoln and longtime loser Teddy Roosevelt.

Lincoln began the race by chasing down William Howard Taft on the warning track. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson then attempted to clothesline the Great Emancipator, but Abe forced his way through and it was the founding fathers who ended up on the ground.

Lincoln took off for the finish line but stopped to showboat for the crowd along the foul line. That’s when Teddy leaped from the stands and planted Lincoln face down in the grass.

On Friday night, Teddy celebrated the night’s big movie opening by racing with a stuffed baby Godzilla. Roosevelt tossed the lizard at his competitors as they approached the finish line, and as they all hit the dirt, Teddy turned to claim the win.

Video: Teddy hurdles over tables to take out his fellow presidents

Teddy Roosevelt hurdles jumps over tables wins presidents raceThe pouring rain wasn’t the only hurdle facing the racing presidents during the fourth inning Friday night at Nationals Park.

As the race began, the team’s “Secret Service” had set up hurdles in the form of folding tables in foul territory along the first base line.

The race was tight approaching the tables, but as his fellow presidents tumbled into the obstacle, the Rough Rider took a beautiful leap over the tables and stuck a clean landing that carried him to victory.
