Video: Presidents race on ice skates in New York

Racing presidents on ice skatesFollowing Saturday’s racing president auditions, the Washington Nationals took to the road to bring the presidents to New York for their annual appearance at a New York Islanders Presidents Day hockey game at Nassau Coliseum.

Donning ice skates, the four presidents raced around the ice until George slammed Teddy into the visitor’s bench. Teddy retaliated by jumping from the bench into the other three presidents, knocking the entire field to the ice.

Washington was declared the winner. Full video:

Video: 2012 Racing President Auditions

Nationals Presidents Race AuditionsPresidents Race AuditionsNationals Presidents Race AuditionsNationals Presidents Race Auditions2012 Presidents Race AuditionsYoung and old, male and female, a lucky few from every corner of the U.S. were invited to Nationals Park on Saturday for the sixth annual racing president auditions.

Nearly 300 people submitted applications for the coveted part-time summer positions. From that pool, only 57 received invitations to try out in person on Presidents Day weekend.

Incumbent presidents have no electoral advantage. Even veterans have to re-audition each year.

The extensive screening included panel interviews plus a range of skills tests which are done in-costume. “We are looking for people who are ready to have a good time,” said Nationals Entertainment Manager Tom Davis, but the day is also designed to weed out those who lack the speed, strength, and stamina to do it in a 45-pound costume.

“It’s like having a big hiking book bag on your back with a few cases of beer sitting on your shoulders,” said one contestant from Bethesda.

Applicants took turns donning the giant costumes, then completing a 40-yard dash followed by two back-to-back presidents races. Candidates were then immediately asked to show off their dance moves and strike a victory pose.

Participants got to choose which costume they wanted to wear, with a notable exception. Teddy Roosevelt has never attended the annual auditions.

“Teddy takes a vacation every year right around presidents day weekend,” said Davis. “I got a postcard from Teddy in Barbados.”

In keeping with tradition, the racing presidents packed up and hit the road to New York, where they will appear Monday during the annual New York Islanders Presidents Day hockey game at Nassau Coliseum.

The presidents will then go into hiatus as the newest batch of presidents prepare for opening day.

Full Nationals Promotion/Giveaway Schedule for 2012

Here it is — the full Washington Nationals promotion/giveaway schedule for the 2012 season at Nationals Park.

There are a several additions to the preliminary schedule we previously shared. Notably, the very popular Pups in the Park promotion, in which a section is reserved for canine guests, returns to Nationals Park for four dates in April, June, July, and September. Only the previously announced luggage tag giveaway has disappeared.

The 2012 promotion schedule includes three Saturday post-game concerts (bands all to be announced), and bobblehead nights for Michael Morse, Stephen Strasburg, and Ryan Zimmerman. Fan Appreciation Day has been redubbed “Fantastic FANale.” The only announced Fireworks for the season are on Tuesday, July 3rd.

The Nationals clearly don’t anticipate the need to promote their three series vs. the Phillies, or their interleague series vs. the Yankees and Rays. Those fifteen games are notable for their absence of giveaways.

Video: Teddy and George in Cupid’s Undie Run

As expected, Nationals racing presidents Teddy Roosevelt and George Washington participated in Saturday’s Cupid’s Undie Run to raise money for The Children’s Tumor Foundation.

Thankfully, they maintained their dignity.

Open auditions to sing the national anthem at Nationals Park

DSC_5017The Washington Nationals have announced that they will hold their 5th annual national anthem auditions at Nationals Park on Saturday, March 10th.

The first 90 people to submit an application will be invited to the auditions, which are closed to the public. To be selected, send an email with your resume and a head shot (recent photo) to anthem@nationals.com.

Note that the team is not looking for originality. Auditions must be “in the traditional style,” and no more than 90 seconds in length. Groups and instrumentalists are invited to audition, but singers must perform a capella.

The Nationals will also hold tryouts for prospective ballgirls this month. If you are at least 18, athletic, energetic, and able to track foul balls without interfering with the play, you can submit a resume, cover letter and recent headshot to entertainment@nationals.com by February 21. Tryouts will be at Nationals Park on Saturday, Feb. 25.

Nats release tickets to Phillies series for DC fans only

The Washington Nationals will begin taking registrations this morning for single-game tickets to just one home series — the May 4-6 games vs. the Philadelphia Phillies at Nationals Park.

The catch? You have to live in DC, Maryland, or Virginia.

The move was announced this morning on MLB.com, where the Nats have posted a registration page to request your tickets.

Phillies fans at Nationals ParkNats CEO Andy Feffer explained that the move was a response to the busloads of Phillies fans who’ve filled Nationals Park from advanced group ticket sales, and engaged in disruptive behavior.

“For several years now, our fans, everybody, have been screaming about the number of Phillies fans that invade our park when we have a series here at Nationals Park,” Feffer told MLB.com’s Bill Ladson. “Frankly, I’m tired of seeing the Phillies fans in our ballpark in Washington more than anything. We sat down as a group and we said, ‘You know what? It’s time to take our park back in Washington and get our fans in this park.’

Fans who register for tickets here will get an email with an invitation to purchase up to 8 individual tickets. The registration information used must match the billing address for your payment card, which must be in DC, Virginia, or Maryland.

The series includes the Nationally-broadcast ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game on May 6.

Great move Mr. Feffer!

Nationals Promotion/Giveaway Schedule for 2012

The Washington Nationals have released details of the 2012 game day promotion/giveaway schedule, including three bobblehead nights and three Saturday night post-game concerts, which were clearly added based on the success of last September’s post-game concert by Lifehouse.

Highlights this season include bobblehead nights for Michael Morse, Stephen Strasburg, and Ryan Zimmerman. The “fan’s choice” bobblehead has apparently been retired. Additional giveaways will include an opening day cap, a replica truck, a beer stein, and several additional shirts and caps.

The promo items were revealed as part of the team’s merchandising for the new 5 Game Flex Plans. The full promotional schedule, including events and celebrations such as Friday Night Fireworks, Pups in the Park, and Ladies Night will be released later this month. We’ll share those as soon as they are available
